Among patients with non-small cell lung cancer, mutation of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is seen in about 20% of Caucasian patients. This altered receptor produces continuous stimulation through different pathways to provide stimulus for cancer cells to survive, proliferate and metastasize. Inhibition of this receptor and the resultant signalling cascade is possible through Afatinib which is a Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI). A detailed discussion is usually held by the treating physician to explain this treatment to the patients.
